Boat fuel protestor to block waterways
Posted on April 28th 2008
Protests against the planned Government increase in the price of marine diesel are gathering pace with disgruntled boat owners planning to block various inland waterways and the possibility of a major port.
The idea would be that private boat owners would link up to form barriers on such rivers like the Thames and Severn. It has also been suggested that a major shipping terminal could be blockaded such as Southampton in a bid to highlight the unfairness of commercial shipping keeping the low taxed diesel.
Boat owners are still being canvassed for support but if enough can be persuaded to join in then a day of national protest could be arranged for late July or early August.
Organisers are hopeful that boat manufacturers will also lend a hand, as the increase could lead to potential customers being put off by the increased running costs
