Boat Wreck owner fined
Posted on December 02nd 2008
A tugboat skipper and a converted houseboat owner have been fined £400 for failing to alert the coastguard that one of their vessels had sunk.
The houseboat owner converted a 40 ft wooden fishing boat into a houseboat a few years ago. The houseboat broke down and required the assistance of a tugboat to safely move it to a safe place.
The tugboat was in the processing of rescuing the boat when it began to sink. The owner of the boat and the tugboat skipper failed to notify the authorities for 24 hours after the boat sunk in the River Crouch leaving other boat users in danger of hitting the sinking vessel
They later tried to remove the wreck with the help of tugs and barges, which cost the wrecks owner thousands of pounds. The Harbour master has now marked the riverbank with a buoy to warn other boats that there is a wreck on the riverbank.
