Boat insurance helped by licence crackdown
Posted on June 11th 2010
Boat owners in Cambridgeshire are facing a crackdown if they haven't renewed or applied for a boating licence. Although there are no checks on boat insurance as part of the licence application there is an indirect connection.
The boat licence is similar to road tax in that the funds raised are used to keep the waterways clear and well-maintained. The fewer boats that pay the licence, the less money there is to keep the waterways safe, so accidents and damage go up. And that makes everyone's boat insurance quote higher the following year.
There is also an argument that says that a boat owner who is law-abiding enough to pay for their licence will have boat insurance as well. So if there is an accident and your boat is damaged, there will at least be a chance of making a successful boat insurance claim The Environment Agency are targeting boats on the River Neme in June.
