Boat Insurance called upon as Aquanaut sinks

Posted on July 17th 2009

Twelve divers had a lucky escape on Saturday when their diving boat suddenly started taking on too much water off the shore of Devon. The divers were all lucky to escape from any serious harm, which can be more than said for the Aquanaut – a damage claim the divers will sure to be contacting their insurance providers for.

In total the Aquanaut took only 8 minutes to completely submerge itself before sinking into the murky depths of the sea. Divers from the Aquanauts Dive Centre in Plymouth were able to abandon ship with the use of a life raft, with two remaining crew reaching safety on the passing yacht Dutch Angel.

Howard Payne, the trip organiser said that “it was one of the most hairiest situations I’ve ever been in” and recalled how some of the boatmen had been locked in the cabin temporarily trying to retrieve life jackets, eventually giving up their hopes before swimming to a passing yacht.

“Praise is certainly deserved to both the Dutch Angel and the lifeboat crew,” ensures Payne. The ten divers were safely taken to the shores of Salcombe after rescue boats were able to reach the adrift divers after following a flare that they had released into the sky.

As a final act of reverence to their vessel, the Wimbledon divers returned to the site off Bolt Head, Salcombe on Sunday to retrieve the boats bell.
