Belfast Maritime Festival ends amongst many waving flags
Posted on August 17th 2009
Crowds lined the coast to wave goodbye to the 40 ships, which had been berthed along the quayside during the Belfast Maritime Festival, which drew to a close on Sunday 16 August.
Spectators were treated to a long parade with ships sounding horns and sails gave way to a full wind, amongst the streamers and waving hands, the masts could been seen hoisting their sailing colours.
The organisers commented that over 500, 000 people descended on the coast line to watch the flotilla and the festival has done much for boasting the local tourist industry at this time of the year and has really put Belfast on the maritime map.
The Mayor of Belfast congratulated the organisers on a spectacular weekend, however traffic severely suffered with spectators clamouring to find the best vantage point. The M5 motorway was grid locked either side of the Lough.
However despite these troubles, many still enjoyed watching a whole host of ships of different shapes and sizes floating through the Lough and other ship enthusiasts flocked further south of the Lough to catch a glimpse of the boat train.
