Aquila crew loses life as boat capsizes
Posted on July 24th 2009
As the Aquila fishing boat capsized in the early evening on Monday 20, July, three men including their captain lost their lives. One lucky survivor was plucked from the sea by a passing yacht and was released earlier on Tuesday afternoon.
The boat, fishing in the waters off Bo Fascadale on the Ardamurchan peninsula, was spotted by members of the public who raised the alarm and summoned the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The deaths of three of its crewmen were made more tragic as the actual capsizing ship was witnessed, meaning that the alarm was raised almost immediately.
The captain, Tony Hayton, will be much missed by the local fishing community, who knew the skipper of the Aquila as a well experience sailor with a reliable and trustworthy sea vessel. His commitment to his profession and his vitality will be sorely lost.
However, further investigations by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said that non of the four crew man were wearing lifejackets, a piece of equipment which could have potentially saved the three men’s lives.
The reason for the boat capsizing still remains a mystery and the crews skilful knowledge adds further cause for concern as whatever caused the boat to overturn occurred incredibly quickly, ultimately claiming three lives.
