All-woman crew smash sailing record
Posted on June 24th 2009
A yacht crossed the finish line at Ventnor, Isle of Wight, yesterday morning, breaking the world record for sailing around Britain and Ireland.
The all-woman crew completed the 2,500 nautical mile tour of the British Isles in 6 days, 11 hours and 53 seconds. Dee Caffari, 36, skippered the 60ft yacht.
Caffati is an experienced round-the-world sailor and became the first woman to sail round the world non-stop both ways in February of this year. She and her crew beat the previous record set in May 2004 by 17 hours and 16 minutes.
The team travelled in an anti-clockwise direction as weather reports suggested that this would be the fastest route.
Sam Davies, also on board, said: “I’m really pleased that we now have the record for women or men. The most important thing is that it’s the outright record”.
