Posted on August 10th 2009
With 14 boats overturning in one race, the cynic's among us may speculate that a certain amount of sabotage and foul-play was running rampant in the competition. Yet the Scottish regatta in Loch Carron saw 14 racing boat overturn when a freak and sudden squall whipped through the race at 6.45pm on Thursday, 6 August.
Luckily all 30 competitors where rescued safely with only a few needing medical attention as two rescue boats fan by competition organisers where first at the scene. Later the coast guard from Stornoway arrived to aid the rescue, rescuers were glad that conditions did not continue to worsen as this could have led to touch-and-go circumstances.
A spokesman form the coastguard said that demands for rescue resources where high with 30 people in the water however the operation ran smoothly; the race on the other hand ended somewhat abruptly and will be re-run.
