QE2 re-homed

Posted on July 20th 2009

The retired cruise ship Queen Elizabeth 2 is speculated to be re-homed at a port in Cape Town, South Africa. Other locations have also been suggested throughout the Middle East and Africa

After owners Cunard sole the line to Dubai Based estate property company Nakheel, the ship sailed to its new supposed home at the end of Dubai's prestigious manmade island the Jeremiah Palm. However after the £50 million price tag, revamp of the ship has been put on hold.

Nakheel had planned to turn the new liner into a stationary hotel for passengers to enjoy the ships history and heritage. Plans had included slicing the QE2's trade mark red chimney from the deck as landing it ashore a prominent landmark on the new palm.

A spokesperson for Nakheel commented that the company had thought and long and hard as to the new location of the QE2 "so that people can still enjoy the maritime icon" in her full glory.

Former Captain, Commodore Ron Warwick explained that he could "see no reason" why the ship shouldn't make the sail as it was "still in working condition" with engines running when he handed the ship over in March.
